Friedrich Nietzsche nasceu numa família luterana em 1844, sendo destinado a ser pastor como seu pai, que morreu jovem em 1849 aos 36 anos, junto com seu avô (também pastor luterano). Entretanto, Nietzsche perde a fé durante sua adolescência, e os seus estudos de filologia afastam-no da tentação teológica.
